
The College of Education for Humanities Holds a Literary Development Festival in the English Department
Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Education for Humanities at Diyala University, Professor Dr. Luay Sayhood Al-Tamimi, and in the presence of the College Council, the English Department held a Literary Development Festival. The festival, attended by a number of faculty members and students, was held as part of the college’s efforts to support cultural and literary activities within the university.The festival, supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Amjad Latif Jabbar and Assistant Lecturer Zainab Qutaiba Abdul Ali, aimed to develop students’ linguistic and literary skills, foster teamwork and student initiatives, and highlight the role of the English Department in the college’s cultural activities, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities.In his opening remarks, the Dean emphasized the importance of literature and language in developing students’ intellectual and cultural awareness. He noted that such events contribute to enhancing linguistic and literary skills, encourage creativity and critical reading, and connect literature to issues of cultural and societal development. The festival featured a diverse program including poetry readings, short story presentations, language competitions, and critical seminars, with active participation from the department’s students. This contributed to developing their expressive abilities and boosting their self-confidence, as well as creating a space for cultural dialogue between students and faculty.The festival also included a visual display of several paintings representing the chronological history of drama, along with presentations of examples from various theatrical styles such as Elizabethan, absurdist, and tragic theater. A statue of the world-renowned writer William Shakespeare was also unveiled.At the conclusion of the events, the festival organizers recommended that it be held annually, with student involvement in planning and execution, the hosting of specialized writers and researchers, the establishment of awards for outstanding creative works, and media coverage of the events.
