The College of Education for Humanities in Diyala Province was established in the academic year 1994–1995 as part of Al-Mustansiriya University. Initially, it comprised the following departments: Arabic, English, and History.
In the academic year 1996–1997, the Departments of Geography and Physical Education were established. Later on, the latter became the nucleus of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, which was established in 1997–1998. In the same year, the Departments of Educational and Psychological Sciences and Biology were also instituted.
In the academic year 1999–2000, the Department of Law was established, which later became the foundation for the College of Law and Political Science in 2002–2003. In the academic year 2002–2003, the Departments of Computer Science and Chemistry were announced. Later, in 2008–2009, the Departments of Quranic Sciences and Islamic Education were added.
Evening studies started first in the Department of Arabic in 1996–1997, followed by the Departments of English and Geography in 1997–1998. The Departments of History and Biology initiated evening studies in 1998–1999, followed by the Department of Computer Science in 2003–2004 and then the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences in 2008–2009.
In the academic year 2007–2008, the Council of the University of Diyala decided to split the college into two: scientific departments became part of the College of Education (Al-Razi), while humanities departments remained in the College of Education (Al-Asma’i).
The college admitted its first cohort of postgraduate (Master’s) students in 2000–2001 in the Departments of Arabic, History, and Geography. In 2002–2003, Master’s programs were introduced in the Departments of English and Educational and Psychological Sciences. The first cohort of Ph.D. students was admitted in 2010–2011 in the Departments of Arabic and Geography. In 2011–2012, a Ph.D. program was introduced in the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences.
In the same year, the names of Colleges of Education across Iraqi universities were standardized, and the institution was officially named the College of Education for Humanities.
Since 1997, the college has published a peer-reviewed journal, Diyala Journal for Human Researches. The college adopts an annual academic system across all departments.
