The College of Education for Humanities Holds a Scientific Seminar on Women’s Rights in Islam
The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities, in cooperation with the Human Rights Unit, held a scientific seminar entitled “Women’s Rights in Islam.” The seminar’s themes were discussed by Professor Dr. Samahir Muhi Musa. The seminar addressed the high status Islam grants to women. The Holy Quran and Islamic law emphasize the honoring of women, the preservation of their lives and freedom, and granting them full capacity to fulfill their social and religious roles, thus ensuring them a dignified life. The lecturer also explained that Islam liberated women from the demeaning view that prevailed in some societies, affirming the principle of equality between men and women in religious and human obligations and duties, with no distinction except based on piety and good deeds. The seminar indicated that the advancement and progress of societies are measured by the extent to which women’s rights are respected and their active participation in civilizational development is ensured. Societies that safeguard women’s dignity and guarantee their human rights are societies aware of the foundations of sound development and have transcended outdated traditions that have diminished women’s status. This seminar is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, by raising awareness of women’s rights and promoting their role in society.
