Under the patronage of the President of Diyala University, Prof. Dr. Tahseen Hussain Mubarak, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Education for Humanities, Prof. Dr. Luay Saihoud Al-Tamimi, the Department of Arabic celebrated Arabic Language Day in collaboration with the Committee for Preserving the Integrity of the Arabic Language at the University Presidency. The event was held on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, under the slogan “Arabic: The Story of Letters and the Depth of Meaning,” in Mustafa Jawad Hall.

The celebration began with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of Surat Al-Fatiha in memory of Iraq’s martyrs. The national anthem was played, and the Dean delivered a speech emphasizing that Arabic is a dynamic and evolving language. He highlighted its importance as a cornerstone of cultural diversity for humanity, being one of the most widely spoken and used languages in the world. Arabic offers access to a rich world of diversity in origins, beliefs, and traditions, thriving in its oral and written forms, whether classical or colloquial, and in its prose and poetry.
The Chair of the Committee for Preserving the Integrity of the Arabic Language, Prof. Dr. Othman Rahman Hameed, represented by Prof. Dr. Iyad Al-Hamdani, delivered a speech. He affirmed that Arabic is one of the world’s significant and influential languages. It is among the official languages adopted by the United Nations, with its World Arabic Language Day celebrated annually on December 18, commemorating the General Assembly’s decision in 1973 to include Arabic as one of the official UN languages.
The celebration featured poetry recitals praising Arabic as the “bride of languages,” delivered by students Sura Khalid Mahmoud, Sura Taha Abbas, and Shamael Fatima Mohammed from the Department of Arabic. Student Noor Youssef Ahmed delivered a speech titled “The Splendor of Arabic on Its Day.” Educational expert Abdul-Muttalib Taha Abdul-Karim Al-Azzawi from the Directorate of Education in Diyala Governorate gave a speech expressing his gratitude for being honored as an educator specializing in Arabic.
Additionally, Prof. Dr. Ali Mutib was honored by the President of the Union of Writers and Authors in Diyala Governorate upon his appointment as the Head of the Arabic Language Department. The University President also presented certificates of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Abbas Ma’an, educational expert Abdul-Muttalib Taha, and Prof. Dr. Iyad Abdul-Wadud Al-Hamdani for their efforts in organizing a dialogue lecture on Arabic language challenges in the digital age.
On the sidelines of the celebration, the University President inaugurated an art exhibition by students of the Arabic Language Department. The exhibition celebrated Arabic Language Day, showcasing various Arabic scripts, creative artworks, and calligraphic designs.
In his closing remarks, the University President commended the professors of the Department of Arabic for their significant contributions to enriching society with proper language and literature. He recalled a personal story with one of his Arabic language teachers, encouraging students to prioritize mastering the correct use of Arabic in writing and speaking. He emphasized the importance of proofreading official documents and administrative correspondences, entrusting Arabic language specialists with preserving the integrity of the language. He concluded by wishing the Arabic Language Department continued success and prosperity.
