The College of Education for Humanities Celebrates Iraqi Environment Day with Awareness Activities Promoting Environmental Sustainability
As part of the College of Education for Humanities’ annual celebration of Iraqi Environment Day, which falls on January 14, 2026, and under the slogan “Environmental Sustainability,” the Geography Department, in cooperation with the Student Activities Division, organized a series of scientific and awareness-raising activities. These activities aimed to solidify inter-agency awareness and emphasize that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that rests on everyone’s shoulders.The events witnessed broad participation from faculty and students of the Geography Department. Activities ranged from field awareness campaigns to scientific posters addressing contemporary environmental issues, most notably plastic pollution, overfishing, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development, reflecting the students’ engagement with societal and environmental issues.The awareness campaigns included various themes, such as “Together Towards a Better Environment,” “Our University, Our Environment, Our Shared Responsibility,” and “Eliminating Plastic Pollutants in Cities.” There were also campaigns advocating for the use of paper bags and reducing overfishing due to its direct impact on disrupting the ecological balanceScientific posters were also displayed addressing the concepts of environmental sustainability, sustainable development, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, as well as introducing the green economy as an important path to confronting environmental challenges and achieving balanced development.Those in charge of these activities emphasized that holding them is in line with the university’s role in serving the community and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to environmental protection and climate action, stressing the importance of continuing such initiatives in building environmental awareness that contributes to achieving a more sustainable future
