
Under the slogan: “Our Reclaimed Water Towards a Sustainable Water Cycle,” the College of Education for Humanities Holds its 20th International Scientific Conference
Under the patronage of the President of Diyala University, Professor Dr. Tahseen Hussein Mubarak, and the supervision and chairmanship of the Dean of the College of Education for Humanities, Professor Dr. Luay Sayhood Al-Tamimi, and in the presence of a distinguished group of academics, the Department of Geography and the Spatial Research Unit at the College of Education for Humanities, Diyala University, held their 20th International Scientific Conference in cooperation with the United Nations Water Aid (UN-Water). The conference, held in conjunction with World Water Day, took place in the Allama Mustafa Jawad Hall from March 30-31, 2026.The conference proceedings began with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem and the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah in remembrance of the martyrs of Iraq and Diyala University.In his opening remarks, the University President welcomed the attendees, emphasizing that this conference is the culmination of ongoing scientific efforts aimed at shedding light on the reality of water resources in Iraq, particularly in light of the challenges of recent years, including water scarcity that has clearly impacted the agricultural sector in several governorates. He noted that the recent improvement in the water situation, due to rainfall and the filling of dams and rivers, represents a significant opportunity to support farmers and enhance food security. He commended the college’s role in organizing rigorous scientific conferences that contribute to addressing vital issues.For his part, the Dean of the College and Conference Chair explained that the conference theme, “Towards a Sustainable Water Cycle,” reflects a scientific vision that seeks to rethink water resource management through the concepts of restoration, reuse, and achieving ecological balance, thus ensuring its sustainability for future generations. He stressed the importance of geography in studying the interaction between humans and the environment and analyzing aquatic phenomena, as well as developing effective strategies for efficient and conscious water management. He pointed out that adopting modern water recycling technologies and promoting a culture of conservation has become an urgent necessity in light of global challenges.For his part, Professor Dr. Abdul Amir Ahmed Abdullah, Head of the Conference Organizing Committee, explained that water is the foundation and essence of life, emphasizing that its preservation is a shared responsibility requiring societal awareness in light of the world’s water scarcity and accelerating climate change. He called for the optimal use of this vital resource to ensure its sustainability.At the conclusion of the conference, the University President honored the participants, researchers, and organizers with shields of creativity and excellence and certificates of appreciation, in recognition of their efforts in making the conference a success.This conference aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water for all.
